Paris, France

The inhabitants of Paris, France are known as Parisians. Locally, dwellers in the suburbs are colloquially identified as banlieusards, taken from banlieue meaning ghetto. The banlieues to the north of Paris tend to be more working-class and have higher immigrant populations than the suburbs to the west and south, which are more bourgeois. Inhabitants of Paris are also known as Riverains due to the Seine River. While those of Île-de-France région (Paris Region) are officially as Franciliens. Parisians tend to refer to people from outside Île-de-France as provinciaux. The use of this term, like referring to the rest of France as les provinces, is considered pejorative.

Pesent mayor of Paris, France is Bertrand Delanoe. He has been in position since March 18, 2001 where he is under the banner of the French Socialist Party. His predecessors were Jean Tiben (1195- 2001) and Jacques Chirac (1977- 1995). Since becoming the over- all head of this French metropolis, his goals have been to improve the quality of life, reduce pollution and cut down traffic jams. He is, however, criticized by majority of the Parisians for having failed to fulfill his promises.

There are about thirteen major districts in Paris, France such as Place de la Bastille is one of the most historical in nature. There is Place de la Concorde which is at the foot of the Champs- Elysees and site of the infamous guillotine. Les Halles comes in third which was formerly Paris, France’s central meat and produce market since the late 1970’s. Le Marais is much more of a trendy Right Bank district with large gay and Jewish populations. Montparnasese is the complete opposite of the latter which has preserved the conservatives like artists studios, music halls and cafe life. Fauborg Saint- Honoree is one of Paris, France’s high- fashion area that is home to designer labels such as Hermes and Christian Lacroix.

Transportation is Paris, France is very up to date. Its role as a center of international trade and tourism has brought many embellishments over the past centuries. The developments are still progressing at a rapid pace today. In the past, it was dubbed as the center of an autoroute system, high- speed train network and through its two major airports, Charles de Gaulle and Orly, it is the hub of international air travel with to 500 cities in 132 countries which welcomes 50 million passengers every year.
