Maui is Hawaii’s “Valley Isle” and its second largest island. Its 729 square miles of land area is home to about 117,644 human population, made up mostly of Caucasians. Some other ethnicities that comprise Maui Hawaii population are Japanese, Hawaiian, Chinese and Filipino. Kahului, Wailuku, and Lahaina are Maui Hawaii’s three biggest towns. Maui Hawaii’s major airport is in the heart of Kahului but a smaller airport is also operating in Kapalua, which is located west of Maui.
Tourism is basically the major industry of Maui Hawaii, with about 2.2 million of visitors every year. This has earned Maui Hawaii the recognition as “the best island in the world” for several years in a row. Aside from that, sugar, pineapple, cattle, and diversified agriculture are also thriving industries as well.
Maui Hawaii has the most number of miles of swimmable beach in all of Hawaii. The waters of Maui Hawaii is visited by approximately 3,000 whales in the winter and is considered to be the largest breeding ground of the Humpback Whales. Tourists are always drawn to the Haleakala National Park, Lahaina Town, Hana and the Maui Ocean Center among tourists’ spots. Maui Hawaii has a total of ten parks, eighteen gold courses, sixteen hotels, one hundred three condominiums with 7343 units.
The different regions in Maui Hawaii have diverse climates. The average winter temperature is 71 degrees, while the average summer temperature is 78 degrees. Maui Hawaii is basically a tropical island. However its constant breezes brings the humidity down which makes heat much more tolerable. These winds travel from northeast at 5-15 miles per hour, cooling the hot tropical air.
Driving around Maui Hawaii is an interesting experience. Terms like mauka (toward the mountain) and makai (toward the sea) will be heard most often in place of north and south terms. Honking is considered a sign of bad manners. So even during traffic, honking is unheard of in Maui Hawaii. Caution is needed when driving near the beach as well. A lot of drivers have been in accidents when they suddenly step on the brakes upon seeing even the tail of a whale. These sightings are very common in Maui Hawaii.
There are several things you need to know about Maui. You’d enjoy your stay much better if you plan your itinerary ahead of time. Hotel reservations are a must if you want to secure a stay in one of the most sought-after hotel in Maui. Maps are also as important as your video camera. Finally, it would be fun and helpful to learn to say more than just “aloha”.
