"Loved It"
Just getting around to writing this review... we stayed the last week of August. I will keep it short and sweet. Hotel was great, but the beach is INCREDIBLE!! I hope its still that way after the hurricane. I did feel a little uncomfortable with the number of topless women, but after a few days I was one of them! It was my first time doing that but I actually liked it. No one really stared or anything... Who cares, you are on vacation right? I think my husband got quite the thrill out of it too :)
Food was so - so, and my husband did get a little sick one night. But it could have been from the drinks too. Who knows. Can't wait to go next year!!
"Dec 3, 2005 - Loved the Golden Crown Paradise Spa"
To all who worry whether they should travel to Cancun,
don't fret - what may lack in Cancun proper nightlife at this moment in time, the staff at
Golden Crown Paradise Spa will recover two-fold.
Kudos, to the STAFF at Golden Crown Paradise Spa!
I honestly can't say that I did't see the evidence of Hurricane Wilma, however my question to all who take vacation getaways is do you go to create your own fun?, or do you expect someone else to create your fun? As the saying goes, Just Do It,
you won't regret it.
As a veteran vacationer to this area, this hotel is truely unique in itself. Adults only, central location, smaller in size and quality facilities are all among its wonderful assets, however the best is whats not listed in a brochure description but provided in the personalized service and attention that gets brought back with you within your vacation memories. You will get personal, you will get remembered, you will be embraced by the hospitalilty of the people, you will make friends and you will create vacation memories that last a lifetime as the staff at Golden Crown Paradise Spa will mark your stay as the first of many just like us. This is one Resort that I am proud to be a repeat guest of. I am glad the hotel is open and I am not deterred by Hurricane Wilma. I will be back again in 2006.
Thank You Golden Crown Paradise Spa for yet another awesome vacation experience.
"Golden Crown Paradise, still the best! 03-10 Dec 2005"
We arrived in Cancun on 03DEC05 at about 6:30 PM. A little different than our most recent trips there, we disembarked via a stairway from the plane and boarded a bus for a very short ride to the terminal. It was reminiscent of some of our first trips to Cancun in the early 90s. We got through customs in record time, (literally 5 minutes), got our bags almost as quickly as the belt started and were outside looking for our ride about 15 minutes after arrival! It was truly amazing. The airport zoo was typical if smaller than before. The usual time share sharks and transportation hustlers were waiting as we departed the airport. No less than 3 actually told me they were with USA Transfer whom I had contracted to transport us to our hotel. When we saw our driver, he was wearing a USA Transfer shirt and had a sign with our name on it. The service was exceptionally good, very reasonably priced and I highly recommend it.
The drive from the airport was a little disconcerting as the damage looked a little spooky in the dark. We were saddened by the damage we saw on the way to our hotel, Golden Crown Paradise Spa, but our mood improved considerably when we pulled up and found the hotel in such good shape. As is the custom of the hotel, we were ushered in to the lobby bar and given the house specialty cocktail, (Golden Crown), while our reservation and room assignments were confirmed. At first we were stumped as to what was different in the lobby bar, then realized that the rock waterfall that was previously all along the South wall had been moved. Those of you who were wondering where the new Japanese restaurant would be, the mystery is solved. The rock was removed and the waterfall rebuild, (only smaller), on a short section of the wall outside the Paradise restaurant, facing West. The wall was opened for entry to the Japanese restaurant. They bumped it out and from what I could tell, it is going to be pretty cool. We were thrilled to see that Miguel, (one of our favorite bartenders), was on duty and as friendly and skilled as ever. When staying at GCPS, we always meet our traveling companions in the lobby bar and frequently have an after dinner drink there as well.
We got ocean view rooms looking over the Tiki Bar. As quick as humanely possible, we shed our heaviest Midwestern garb and dashed to the Tiki Bar, thrilled to find Jose on duty. Those of you who have been there will not be surprised to learn that he remembered us by name and city. The guy is amazing.
The hotel, though 90% ready, still had some repairs ongoing on the 6th floor and a few other minor problems. They were 90% ready, but about 5% full. I think there were literally less than 3 dozen people in the hotel for much of the week. The upside was that the service was unbelievable. Every member of the staff knew every guest. We had the entire run of the place. Have you ever looked around a crowded hotel pool and thought how cool it would be to have the place to yourself? We really did! On our last trip there, we took turns getting up early to reserve our favorite spots. This trip we spread out as we liked and had both shady and sunny spots.
Another thing that was so great is that the guests all got to know each other. We ran into some really cool people from LaCrosse, WI who had read my posts on Trip Advisor. We had a lot of fun with them over the course of the week and are really glad they were there at the same time. We also had a lot of fun with some great folks from Chicago. We traded e-mail addresses and who knows, maybe we will all have a reunion someday. I am certain we will never have another experience like this one though.
The hotel kept every restaurant open all of the published hours. All services were available at all times. Our traveling companions were in the habit of calling room service for a nightcap and dessert after partying at the Tiki Bar. One night the hotel was having phone problems so they watched for them to return to their hotel room and knocked on the door to see if they wanted anything from room service. Have you ever heard of such a thing? A few people asked for complimentary upgrades to Club rooms that were available and were accommodated. We didn’t ask as I had already unpacked and really liked the view from the room we had.
Worried about the beach? While the restoration is scheduled to start really soon, that will just be icing on the cake if it doesn’t happen real soon as the beach is coming back naturally. People were on the beach in deck chairs, riding boogie boards, playing catch, whatever. In it’s present condition, you can certainly spend time on the beach. We were amazed how much beach was there when pictures from a few weeks earlier indicated there was none. The sand deck is really pretty cool. It is just a flat, sand covered ledge, (just like beach), accessible from the back side of the pool where the stairs used to go down to the palapas. We have pictures.
Some staff updates, Jose and Alphonso are still at the Tiki Bar and would sure like to see you all. The Paradise, (where most people eat breakfast), has mostly the same staff. The person there that always brightened my day was Oscar. He has a smile that will light up a room. He is smiling especially wide these days as his wife is ready to give birth to their third child any day. He and Gabriel were our favorites when we were there before and they still are. The whole staff is great, but they are just really special. Cristina, the pool waitress is another of our particular favorites. Do you see a pattern here? All of the staff is great. The only distinction is between those that are merely great and the ones that are truly exceptional. The food was all quite good, the bars a lot of fun and as always, it was a wonderful experience. I am sure that we will never have another one like it. That won’t stop us from trying however.
To those of you who are considering delaying your trips because you don’t want to settle for less, I think you may be missing an opportunity. This last week was truly a unique experience. We had so much fun that we were hoarse from laughing. The people of Cancun we so glad to see us that it was humbling. I urge anyone who has an opportunity to go as soon as possible and take advantage of all the perks of being in a hotel that is less than 100% full. You will not wait for anything and royalty does not get better service.
