"Nearly Perfect"
I stayed at the Grand Aqua in August of '05 and I must say it was a great experience. From the moment you arrive you feel a sense of calm and peace as the vista from the lobby of the pools and the beach overwhelm you and the scent of the aromatherapy instantly puts you in vacation mode. The check-in staff was very accomadative and polite and the bellman was knowledgeable and helpful (he helped me put the two double beds together as they did not have any rooms left with a larger bed). He also helped me connect my i-pod to the stereo that was provided by sending the house dj up to our room. Towels were always plentiful and toiletries were overflowing. I guess it might have helped that we spoke spanish and we were always extrelmely polite but we did not encounter any problems with the hotel staff. The food options were incredible as the pool restaurant had an awesome menu and the restaurant that offers the breakfast buffet (highly recommend) were the best ones. I did not find them particularly pricey (then again I live in Manhattan so I have a warped sense of what things are worth). The service by the pool was top notch as I never went thirsty or wet. The smaller adult pool is where we were mostly because there were a lot of children in the main pool areas. The children were very well behaved but were acting like kids (running, screaming etc) as is their right. The adult pool had a great dj which definitely put you in the right mood. The rooms were decorated with a minimalist vibe and the doors were weirdly laid out (the bathroom door opened out instead of in and it repeatedly crashed into the closet door in the very tight hallway leading to the front door). The bathroom was clean and had a separate shower (which didn't leak) and tub. The propietary toiletries were superb and worth bringing back with you. The only complaint I would have is that there is a serious lack of nighttime activity at the hotel. By 10 PM it was basically dead. It's almost like going to the Shore Club or the Delano in South Beach and the nightlife being non-existent. This hotel is screaming for a rooftop bar or some other hot 'destination place' that would attract a more upscale clientele that what you would usually run into in the rest of Cancun. The location across the street from the mall is very convenient and allows you to get certain basics without having to pay the exhorbitant prices the hotel was asking. In summation this was an awesome hotel which I hope was not terribly damaged by the hurricanes and which if I were to return to Cancun would be the only place I would consider staying.
"Loved This Hotel"
I'm a resident from Colorado, and this was my fiances and I's first trip to cancun. We were very very pleased with the service and how this hotel was set up. When we arrived there, there was the bell boys waiting to greet us and take us to the front counter where we would recieve our room key. While we were getting our key they have these waiters that come by and give you this cup of tea( let me tell you it was so good). We get our key in very short time and proceed to our room. Once we get to our wonderfull room, instead of the bell boy just coming in without asking, they do this bow thing that means welcome and may i please enter your room. We were very pleased by this and welcomed him in. He showed us every little nook and cranny in this huge room. This man was very polite and answerd every question that we had. We stayed for 6 nights and got to be apart of * Hurrican Wilma* very scary but due to this 5 star hotel they were prepared and they took incredibly good care of us during the mass destruction. Our shelter that we stayed in was pretty much a 5 star also, compared to what we heard about the others far and near by. Those people are very kind and treat you like royalty even in the worst conditions. The only thing that we didn't like was how much the food cost in the hotel, $70 for a buffet meal. That was the only down side to it all.
I would recomend this hotel to anyone who wants a vacation in paridise. My fiance and I are expected to get married there when they re- open in 2006. I am very excited to see how the people and hotel look.
"Aqua is Great for a Low Key Trip"
My Wife and I stayed at the FAGA for 4 days and enjoyed it very much.
OVERALL - This hotel is very similar to the W but the linens/beds are not quite up to those standards. Also, as many others have said the bath water is a bit discolored. We had a suite with a large private balcony, great for laying out au naturel if you like. The view from the 6th floor was awesome and the breeze helped us cool down as the A/C is very slow to get to 65.
FOOD - MB is awesome. We wanted to try many different restaturants in the area but liked MB so much that we ate there 2 of the 4 nights for dinner. Chef Lindsey is incredible. Siete is a nice option for breakfast once or twice and the service there is very good as well.
POOLS - Great service, relaxing, plenty of seating options, no need to pay extra for the "covered" beds.
STAFF - All very attentive and friendly. There were many more Mexican or Central American families and couples that US or Europeans but we still were treated very well by all.
We would go again for a quiet, quick getaway in the future.
